Three Problems in the Theory of the Optional Infinitive Stage: Stage/ Individual Predicates, Eventive Verbs and Finite Null-Subjects

چکیده

Much of the early morphology and syntax of clause structure (until roughly age 3;0) can be described via the Optional Infinitive (OI) model (Wexler 1990, 1992, 1994), and recent versions of the theory incorporating the Unique Checking Constraint (UCC) (Wexler 1998) successfully explain variation in whether a language goes through the OI stage. The purpose of this paper is to apply the theory to three further phenomena which appear to describe early morphosyntax:

Eventivity effects in early grammar: The case of non-finite verbs

During the Root Infinitive (RI) stage children produce both stative and eventive finite verbs, but their non-finite verbs are restricted to eventive predicates (Hoekstra & Hyams, 1998; Wijnen, 1997). This Eventivity Constraint (EC) holds cross-linguistically – for RIs in Dutch, German, French, and Russian, ‘bare perfectives’ in Greek, bare participles (participles without an auxiliary) in Itali...

Modelling the Development of Dutch Optional Infinitives in MOSAIC

This paper describes a computational model which simulates the change in the use of optional infinitives that is evident in children learning Dutch as their first language. The model, developed within the framework of MOSAIC, takes naturalistic, child directed speech as its input, and analyses the distributional regularities present in the input. It slowly learns to generate longer utterances a...

Tense, Agreement and Defaults in Child Catalan: An Optimality Theoretic Analysis

At the earliest stage of acquisition, children learning languages such as German, English or Swedish often have an “optional infinitive” stage. During this stage, child productions include both verbs used correctly as well as infinitival forms used as matrix verbs (e.g., Weverink 1989, Platzack 1990, Wexler 1994, Schütze 1997). It has been claimed that children learning null subject or richly i...

The Root Infinitive Stage in Afrikaans: Evidence for Phonologically Neutralized Rich Agreement Running Head: The RI-Stage in Afrikaans: Evidence for Null AGR

Corpus data available on the CHILDES database reveal that children acquiring Afrikaans go through an ‘Root Infinitive Stage’. The most successful theory of this developmental stage holds it to be the indirect result of a difficulty children have with movement of a subject to a higher, agreeing node in the clause. It follows that presence of the Root Infinitive Stage in child Afrikaans supports ...

The Temporal Interpretation of Dutch Children’s Root Infinitivals: The Effect of Eventivity

This study concerns the presence and status of Tense in young children’s nonfinite main clauses, or root infinitivals (RIs). Verb-containing utterances produced by four Dutch-speaking boys (age range 1;9 3;2) were classified along the following dimensions: finite infinitive; temporal reference, as indicated by linguistic and non-linguistic context; and type of verb: eventive vs. non-eventive. T...
